Vitamin D and Sports Performance

A deficiency of vitamin D will affect the musculoskeletal system, which can lead to increased risk of injuries, such as stress fractures and muscle injuries.

And it can also affect crucial training parameters, such as the quality of the training, along with the frequency and duration of the injuries or illnesses, and, as a result, affect sporting performance.

For a long time, vitamin D has been associated with muscle weakness, and in recent years this fact has been investigated and there is evidence of a variety of sources that link vitamin D deficiency with less than optimal muscle function.

Risk of injury due to lack of Vitamin D
Osteomalacia is a syndrome that is characterized by a softening of the bones due to the loss of calcareous salts and is caused by a lack of vitamin D. So this lack has been associated with an alteration of bone metabolism.

However, in addition to its effect on bone, vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with a myopathy that manifests itself as weakness and muscle pain, mainly in the lower extremities, which leads to an increased risk of falls and, therefore so much, to develop fractures.

Vitamin D to increase muscle mass
A deficiency of vitamin D can affect the synthesis of proteins in the muscle. Therefore, it can be observed that the effects on muscle tissue is that it can improve the anabolism of muscle proteins, increase muscle mass and decrease the rate of muscle protein degradation.

Conclusions
Vitamin D can improve athletic performance in athletes with vitamin D deficiency, as it prevents the loss of muscle and bone mass, which improves muscle strength and power and decreases the risk of falls and stress fractures.
